About this book

It’s FA Cup final day, but it doesn’t feel like it. Old Trafford is far from full, none of the royal family are in attendance, and many of the fans are in military garb. This is the ‘Khaki final’ of 1915, and as ‘God Save the King’ rings out around the stadium, thoughts turn to the friends and family fighting in trenches overseas. It doesn’t feel like a cup final, but it is one – and the Blades are determined to win it.

Win it, they did. A 3-0 victory over Chelsea that day sealed Sheffield United’s third FA Cup win, shortly before football was suspended until the end of the war. It was a rare reason to raise a celebratory glass in the Sheaf House, during a sombre, uncertain time in the Steel City.

This book takes Blades fans back through the club’s history from 1915 onwards, through authentic newspaper reports that capture the on-pitch action as it was reported in the next day’s headlines. United’s journeys up and down the football pyramid make for a 140-page thriller, as entertaining as the 8-0 win over Wednesday in 1934.
