What happened in this year for a 1916 newspaper to capture the public’s attention? 1916 was a tragic year in Europe. It saw the beginning of two of the most devastating battles in history, the Battle of Verdun and the Battle of the Somme, which led to over 2 million casualties combined. Germany bombed Paris with their Zeppelins. Irish republicans rose against British occupation in Dublin, in what would become known as the “Easter Rising”.
The largest naval battle of World War I would take place during the Battle of Jutland, leading to the deaths of over 8000 people. In the US, American oil tycoon John D.
