During the second half of the 20th century, the future of the human race hung in the balance. The rivalry between the US, Soviet Union and their respective allies brought the world to the brink of nuclear war. This book of past articles from The Telegraph captures that horrendous threat.
As communism spread across Eastern Europe and into China, North Korea and beyond, the US felt compelled to stem the tide and defend capitalism to the end. When the Soviet Union installed nuclear missiles in Cuba in 1962, the resulting crisis raised the temperature of the Cold War to an excruciating peak.
In the late 1980s, Gorbachev attempted to democratise the Soviet Union, yet weakened his own party in the process. As the Soviet Union crumbled in 1991, this perilous chapter in history ended. However, the menace of nuclear weapons lingers to this day.
