It would be ten years after the founding of the franchise for the Padres to win a season. Their first foray into the playoffs came 6 years later, when they won the NL West and the pennant, but eventually lost to the Detroit Tigers in the World Series. The Padres were led back to the biggest stage in baseball under Manager of the Year Bruce Bochy in 1998, following a 98-64 season. This was the best in their history, but they would, unfortunately, lose again at the last hurdle to the Yankees. The team became the only major professional sports team in San Diego after the NFL Chargers left for Los Angeles, and they’re also the only MLB team to not share its city with another professional sports franchise.
