About this book

It’s FA Cup final day in 1937, and most bus and train workers are on strike. Many of the 93,000 fans are forced to walk long distances to Wembley, the rain pitter-pattering on their umbrellas. Sunderland fans would walk all the way from Wearside if they had to though – this is their team’s big shot at lifting the cup for the first time.

That rainy day ended with Sunderland captain Raich Carter receiving the trophy from the King and Queen, after a 3-1 win over Preston North End. But this is just one momentous day in Sunderland’s long footballing history. This book takes Black Cats fans on a tour of their team’s heritage, through authentic newspaper articles from the time.

In 140 pages, match reports cover Sunderland’s biggest moments, from a 9-1 derby win over Newcastle in 1908, to the turbulent times and recent revival of the past decade. Printed in tabloid-size hardback, with the recipient’s name embossed on the cover, this book goes together with Sunderland fans better than Niall Quinn with Kevin Phillips.

Archivist insight: We reproduce these newspaper articles from the Daily Mirror scan archive. In some cases, there’ll be blemishes and the reproduction quality might not be as clear or precise as it was in the original paper.
