About this book

Riggins breaks through. “He’s gone! He’s gone!” roars the announcer. Over 100,000 bellowing fans create a cacophony of noise at the Rose Bowl, as Riggins heads for the end zone. It’s goosebumping, history-making moment. After a season blighted by strikes, cynicism and acrimony over money, it’s a timely reminder: moments like these are what football is really about.

That shortened 1982 season won’t be remembered too fondly by most football fans. But for fans of the Skins, it was the glorious end to a long title drought. This book traces Washington Commanders’ history back to the title-winning season of 1937, so fans can enjoy the ride and hail to the Commanders, through authentic newspaper reports from the Washington Post.

Reports go into depth on the best moments from the George Preston Marshall and Edward Bennett Williams era, including Sammy Baugh passing the team to several glories in the 40s. Then the days of ‘The Hogs’ make the 80s and early 90s especially good reading, with wins at Super Bowls XVII, XXII and XXVI. And more seasons cover clutch comebacks, a historic rebranding and several satisfying wins over the Cowboys.
