50th Anniversary Gifts for a Golden Anniversary

Gold is the traditional gift for a 50th wedding anniversary. It is also the modern one. Most years carry two answers, an older list of materials that came out of European custom and a newer one drawn up by the American jewellery trade, and for most years the two name different things. At 50 they agree.

Knowing the material does not get you far. Fifty years is a difficult anniversary to buy for, and the difficulty has nothing to do with the gift list. Most couples reaching it are in their seventies, living in a house that is already full, and have been given jewellery several times before. They are generally trying to own fewer things rather than more. Anything bought for the occasion has to earn its place against that.

This guide is arranged by who is giving rather than by what things are made of. A gift from a daughter and a gift from a neighbour are different problems, and the traditional list has nothing to say about the difference.

What is the 50th wedding anniversary called?

Americans call it the golden anniversary. The British call it the golden wedding. Both names appear in print on either side of the Atlantic and either will be understood, so there is no wrong choice on an invitation or a card.

The gemstone row catches people out. At most anniversaries the gemstone is a stone. At 50 it is the metal itself, which is why gold appears three times in one table and why there is no way to consult the wrong list and get this year wrong.

For every other year, see our full list of anniversary gifts by year.

Why gold, and how to use it as a test

Gold is on the list for a chemical reason rather than a sentimental one. It does not react with air or moisture, so it does not tarnish. A 24-carat piece comes out of a drawer after 30 years the colour it went in. Lower-carat alloys can dull slightly, because of the copper and silver mixed in to harden them, but nothing like the way silver blackens.

That property is what the tradition is pointing at, and it converts into a test that works on any gift at any anniversary. Will this be in the same condition at their 60th?

Gold jewellery passes. Gold plating does not, because it wears through at the edges where a piece is handled and the base metal comes up underneath. Flowers fail, which is no objection to flowers; they are for the day rather than the decade and everyone understands that. Photographs go either way depending entirely on how they are finished. A proper print behind UV glass will hold its colour for decades. An inkjet print in a sunlit hallway will not manage ten years. Anything tied to a file format fails outright, and that one is worth pausing on, because digital frames and slideshows loaded onto a memory stick are common anniversary presents. Nobody notices the problem until the day somebody tries to open it.

The test will not tell you what to buy. It separates the gifts that mark the occasion from the ones that outlast it, which are two different jobs and both worth doing.

Where the anniversary gift list came from

The two lists have very different origins, and the older one is much shorter.

Silver at 25 years and gold at 50 come from German-speaking Europe, where a wife reaching 25 years of marriage was presented with a silver wreath and at 50 years a gold one. TIME’s history of the custom finds solid evidence of the silberne Hochzeit and goldene Hochzeit by the 18th century. Nothing else on the modern list has that pedigree.

More milestones had accumulated by the middle of the 19th century. The 1859 Old Farmer’s Almanac counted off sugar at one month, paper at one year, wood at five, tin at ten, silver at 25, gold at 50 and diamond at 75. Emily Post reproduced a version in her 1922 book Etiquette, noting that large anniversary parties were then thought poor form in America, with the golden wedding treated as the exception.

The year-by-year list reproduced in most gift guides today came from the trade. The American National Retail Jeweler Association, now Jewelers of America, took the question up at its 1922 convention, where a member pointed out that jewellers waited 50 years for a golden anniversary and sold very little in between. The expanded list is usually dated to 1937.

None of which discredits the list. It explains what the list is, which is a prompt drawn up partly from custom and partly by people with something to sell. That is the reason the sections below are organised by who is giving.

Sources: time.com/4771179/history-anniversary-gifts-paper-silver-gold (TIME, Merrill Fabry) for the German wreaths, the 1859 Almanac, Emily Post and the 1922 convention; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wedding_anniversary for the 1937 date and the Jewelers of America name change. The 1937 date is written as ‘usually dated to’ because TIME’s primary-source account has the work beginning in 1922 and running over the following decade.

50th anniversary gifts for parents

Ask a couple married 50 years what they want and most will say nothing, and most will mean it. What they cannot obtain for themselves is the outside view. They know what the marriage felt like from the inside. They have far less idea what it looked like to everyone around them, and that gap is the one worth filling.

The wedding photograph is the usual starting point, largely because of its condition. Couples who married in the 1970s tend to have a single print, faded towards orange, postcard sized, in a frame that was inexpensive when it was new. Scanning and restoring it costs little and produces something for the wall they will stop and look at. Hanging the front page from the same date beside it sets the private record of the day against the public one.

A book of handwritten pages, one from every child and grandchild, is the idea most families begin and fewest finish. Collecting them takes weeks, because one relative always takes weeks, and that effort shows in the finished object in a way a purchase does not.

Rings are worth considering. Fifty years of wear thins a band, and most people assume the choice is to carry on wearing it or put it away. A jeweller can reset the original stone, thicken the shank, or resize a ring that stopped fitting decades ago. It gives them back something they already own.

The party is the exception. It fails the test set out above and still belongs here, provided it is organised end to end so the couple attend rather than host. What lasts afterwards is the photographs, and the fact that everyone came.

If you are choosing between objects, our golden anniversary collection is a starting point.

50th anniversary gifts from grandchildren

Grandchildren have the least money in the family and the best access to the couple. The access is the thing to spend.

Recording them talking about how they met is the strongest version of it, and a phone is enough equipment. The questions that produce something worth keeping are the ordinary ones nobody has asked since the 1970s: what the other one was wearing, who spoke first, what the rent was. Transcribe it afterwards, because a transcript gets read and a recording tends not to.

Most couples also have a box or a drawer of loose photographs with nothing written on the back, and within a generation nobody will know who is in them. Scanning the lot and labelling each one takes a few evenings and produces something no shop sells.

The smallest option is often the best received. Learn to make the thing one of them used to cook, and cook it for them.

Gifts between the couple

For the couple themselves, gold jewellery is the direct reading of the tradition and it works, particularly engraved with the wedding date. A vow renewal, or a return to wherever the honeymoon was, are the two common alternatives.

There is a pattern worth naming. At 50 years couples more often want the arrangement made than the object bought: the booking, the table, the tickets, the logistics handled by somebody else. In most marriages one person has done that job for five decades. A year off from it is a real gift.

What guests should bring, and what to write

Bring something if you have been invited to a party, and keep it modest. If the invitation says no gifts, it usually means it.

The distinction that matters is between keepsakes and everything else. Photographs, memory books and engraved objects belong to the family, who have both the material and the standing to give them. The same thing from a guest tends to land awkwardly. Wine, flowers, anything consumable, or a contribution towards a shared family gift all sit correctly.

Cash is ordinary in some families and uncomfortable in others, and there is no way to tell from outside. Asking whoever is organising whether a group gift exists settles it, and putting money into that is safer than guessing.

The card carries more weight than the gift, and most cards waste the space. A specific observation about the couple, something you have actually watched them do, is worth more than any number of good wishes about the next 50 years.

How much do you spend on a 50th anniversary gift?

No survey publishes reliable figures for anniversary gift spending. The averages quoted confidently around the internet have no primary source behind them. The closest genuine comparison is the wedding gift, where The Knot’s 2024 guest study put the US average at $150, and a golden anniversary gift from a guest normally sits below that.

Thinking in bands is more useful than fixing on a number, because a band tells you what is within reach. At the lower end, a good bottle, flowers, a framed print. In the middle, a restored and enlarged photograph, an original newspaper from the wedding date, or a decent piece of engraving. At the upper end, gold jewellery, resetting a ring, or a share of the party.

In 1976, the headlines ranged from the technological to the astonishing. The Daily Mirror, dated 21 January 1976, carried ‘BLAST OFF’ and ‘High hopes ride on the superjet’ on the day Concorde entered scheduled passenger service; the event itself took place on 21 January, with British Airways and Air France flights departing that day.

Later that year, the Daily Mirror, dated 2 December 1976, announced ‘KINGS OF THE PUNK CULT…’ in its report on the emerging punk scene. These are publication dates printed on the surviving editions, not simply dates attached retrospectively to the events they describe.

There is another part of the archive that is less visible in the finished page. Historic Newspapers archive in Western Scotland is overseen by ten archivists. Each original newspaper is examined page by page, pressed flat and repaired where necessary with archival repair tape; missing dates can sometimes reflect periods when a title was on strike.

That distinction matters. A wedding day newspaper is not just a record of the wedding: it is a physical object carrying its own materials and characteristics of the time, preserving the particular date and version of the wider world that existed around it.

If a bound volume suits better than a single paper, the Golden Anniversary in Headlines book collects the year’s reporting.

Ordering and timing: what needs lead time

Several of the gifts above cannot be arranged in a week.

Archive sourcing takes longer when a specific date has to be searched for rather than picked from stock. Photo restoration depends on the condition of the original and on whatever queue the restorer is working through. Engraving adds days to a jewellery order, and more if the piece has to be resized first. Collecting a handwritten page from every member of a family takes as long as the slowest relative. A dedicated bench or a civic plaque needs council or committee approval and should be started months ahead of the date.

One thing to establish before buying any newspaper. Ask whether you are getting the physical paper or a reproduction of it. Both are legitimate and they are different products at different prices. An original should arrive with a certificate of authenticity. A headline book is printed from scanned archives and is sold as such. Our wedding anniversary newspapers page lists which dates can be supplied.

FAQs

What is the traditional gift for a 50th wedding anniversary?

Gold, and it’s a modern gift as well. The 50th is one of the few anniversaries where the traditional and modern lists name the same material.

Are you supposed to bring a gift to a 50th wedding anniversary?

Yes, if you have been invited to a party. Keep it modest, and consumable rather than commemorative, unless you are immediate family.

What do you buy for 50 years of marriage?

Something that will look the same in a decade. Gold, a restored wedding photograph, or an original newspaper from the wedding date all qualify.

How much do you give for a 50th anniversary gift?

There is no published average to work from. Guests generally spend less than they would on a wedding gift, and children usually pool into one larger present.

What is the flower for 50 years of marriage?

The yellow rose, with the violet listed as an alternative. The colour is gold, which is the detail that decides invitations and table settings.

What is the 50th wedding anniversary called?

The golden anniversary in the United States and the golden wedding in Britain. The milestone is the same and either name will be understood.

How do you work out which year a couple married?

Subtract 50 from the anniversary year. A golden wedding in 2029 means a marriage in 1979.

What is the difference between the UK and US anniversary gift lists?

Mainly the names. The milestone materials match, but American lists carry a fuller modern column drawn from the 1937 jewellers’ list.
